Control Your Range of Motion
I’ve posted before about hypermobility, but today I’m going to talk specifically about hyperextension of the knees. I have always had hyperextended knees and it has been drilled into me “don’t sit into your hyperextension.” So I didn’t. But through my Z-Health studies I realized that, if I have a certain range of motion in my body, I need to know how to control it — THAT is the way to keep the joint healthy.
This is true of every joint, regardless of whether you have hypermobility there — whatever range of motion you have, you should be able to move in that range with control. So, for my knees, that means moving in and out of hyperextension with control. If I can learn to do that safely, then the next time I find myself going into hyperextension accidentally or with too much load, my brain will have a learned habit for how to get out of it because it has practiced.
Check out the video below for an example of some loaded knee circles where I am focusing very specifically controlling the movement in and out of hyperextension. And then take inventory of your own movement and joints — do you have control over the range of motion you have?
